Poles are frequently used for pole barns, meter poles, light poles and rope courses.  Pilings are timbers, usually round, which are normally driven where the smaller end (tip) is placed in the ground first, then driven in, as a support for a superstructure.  Some uses for pilings are house pilings, friction pilings, piers, marinas, and bulkheads.
